May 28, 2023 @ 7:45 AM - 10:00 AM EDT
FreeFLAGS FOR FALLEN VETERAN’S ~ 2023
Dates: Placement Day - Sunday, May 28
Removal Day - Saturday, June 3
Sections (Fields): #406 & #407 for VCC & CV&CCC.
Arrival Time at FL. Nat’l Cemetery: 8:30 – 8:45 A.M. *No one should begin placing the flags until after Taps is played! Let’s all begin with Sec. #406, and then proceed to Sec. #407.
Placement should take us approx. 1 ½ hours total. With many hands, it goes quickly!
Parking: On the side of the road, just off the grass, in front of Section #406 or #407, or somewhere in between those 2 sections.
We will meet at the Citrus County Fairgrounds on U.S. 41 South at 7:45 a.m. with a 7:55 a.m. departure.
U.S. 41 South to Lake Lindsey Road. Take a left onto Lake Lindsey Road and head east to CR 476B. Take a right onto CR 476B and head south, southeast to Florida National Cemetery. 24 Miles Total from the Fairgrounds 27 Minutes.
What to bring:
A long-handled screwdriver (to make a the hole in the ground.)
Bottled water, or whatever you care to drink.
It’s best to wear sneakers, or Crocs, as the grass may be wet or damp, from the sprinklers or dew.
Club or post banner, for a group photo.
A poncho or raingear, if the weather is rainy. This is a “Rain or Shine” event. Only lightning will cancel it.
A dry pair of socks & sneakers (or sandals) to change into, once done. Since your sneakers may get wet, it’s nice to change into something dry for the ride home.
An old towel, to clean your dirty sneakers, if not changing out of them. (Got to keep your Vette or Camaros floor clean!)
Hat or visor, sunglasses
Flags Placement Details:
*Flags need to be placed in the front of the graves only, 12” from the center of the headstone or marker, & 4” deep.
Nothing gets placed at the back of the headstone, even if there’s a name there.
*While placing the flag, the soldier’s (or spouse’s) name should be read aloud & thank them for their service & sacrifice.
If there is already a flag there, try to place yours in the correct location.
If there are any family present in that section, please allow them to place their own flag or decoration first. Then our group can begin placing.
